“Brace yourself. It gets cold up there.”
I can feel the draft already, and with every step the chill becomes more intense. This thing, whatever it is, is unquestionably powerful.
It would seem the White Rose was right. I may have my honor this day.
“It’s through those doors there. From what I’m told, the only way to kill such a thing is to go for its heart. But be very careful not to damage it’s neck or backbone. A powerful curse will be upon you if that happens.”
She places a key in my hand.
“I must ask that you lock the door behind you. Know that the key you hold is the only one. Should you fail, there will be no one to save you.”
“Should I fail, there would be no one that could.”
I turn to meet my fate. Though it is a straight clear line to turn door, I can just barely make out where to go.
Darkness covers my eyes the closer I get, and confusion slows my mind.
I don’t think I’ve ever felt a cold like this before.
This chill feels as though the life is being drained from my bones.
I’ve faced down and killed shadow beast that would give even the most accomplished hunter pause and I have done it without giving even a second thought to what must be done. But every step I take instills something new in me.
Fear.
Dread.
Doubt.
Is this what you felt in the end, Father?
Did you question yourself as death drew near?
Did you think to run?
My sight and mind clear as I reach the door, only for me to be faced with more uncertainty.
The iron door and the frame look blacked by fire
God…
I can’t steady my hand to place the key in the lock.
No, Abini.
You cannot afford fear.
I’ll have my honor.
I will be remembered.
I twist the key in the lock and the door creaks open.
From a high round window moonlight seeps into the room enough to see the creature shacked in heavy chains.
The sound of my unsteady breathing and rapid heartbeat fill my ears.
I’m struggling to pull the door closed.
